VARGHKOGHARGASMAL "Drowned In Lakes" CD
Who is this mysterious band known as Varghkoghargasmal. Self proclaimed purveyors of WOODEN METAL! The sound of wooden metal seems to be basically black metal with no distortion. Maybe Wooden Metal means 'acoustic' metal. But the guitars here are electric, although recorded through what sounds like a practice amp with no distortion. And the drums, HOLY SHIT, don't even get us started. A stumbling struggling drum beat that wavers away from the actual beat more often than not. And it's recorded in some impossibly reverby way that gives it a really haunting otherworldly sound. Simple and spare, un-distorted riffs, almost like a slowed down Dick Dale or Link Wray, with strangely motorik drum beats, that are sometimes just off enough to sound like some weird Kompakt style techno beat. In fact, this could maybe be some sort of weird black metal surf rock techno track. If there was such a thing. Strange minor key melodies join the fray, and warbly fuzzed out keyboards drift and whir, only serving to make the sound more confusional. Stumbling reverbed clean guitar picking out blackened surf rock riffs, weird keyboard drones. The fast songs are the strangest, with the clean guitar blurring into swaths of damaged melody and the drums a chaotic blasting rumbling murky throb way down in the mix. Like some outsider alien krautrock Hard to explain the damaged magic of Varghkoghargasmal other than to say you have NEVER heard anything like this. Fucking amazing!!!! Wooden Metal!!! VEXED "Endless Armageddon" CD
Old-school black retro-thrash from Italy with distinctive German influences. Limited to 1000 Hand numbered copies.
Formed in 1996, Vexed set out to recapture the raw spirit of German thrash metal, i.e. Kreator, Sodom, and Destruction, and remodernize it with the sound of newer black metal. Nightmare Holocaust is the band's second full-length, following their debut, Endless Armageddon, as well as with numerous singles and compilation appearences. Dressed in black, with bullet belts and spiked wrist bands galore, Vexed, alongside Aura Noir, Desaster, Absu, and a whole list of others, are an intergal part of the old school black thrash army. Toward the end of the 1990's there came a huge resurgence of interest, and vast homage in '80's thrash metal. Great bands like Usurper, Sweden's Bewitched, Inferno, Deathwitch, Swordmaster, Gehennah, Aura Noir, Cranium, and others begun the whole "retro" trend of playing and sounding like the early '80's bands. Some, like Absu, Usurper, and Nifilheim took the sounds and expanded on them, making them more extreme and original. Others, like Inferno or Bewitched simply copied and plagarized their sound in a simple, tributizing way. Regardless, I throughly enjoyed all of the bands that came out in homage to their heroes and collected almost all of the recordings of that time and still do. The early '80's with Destruction, Kreator, Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost, Slayer, and Venom was a great time for original, extreme music, and with the resurgence of retro-thrash in the '90's it was a sort-of reliving that nostalgic feeling of youth again. So, Vexed are able to really capture that feeling in a retro way. They are like a mix of Desaster and Aura Noir- fast, raw, with real thrashing riffs throughout and fiery vocals that are a cross between modern black metal and old Pleasure to Kill era Kreator. In short, its killer thrash, but the band also add their own sound to it. "War Corpse Machine," with its robotic mechancial chanting repetitiveness, is a completely different idea compared to the rest of the straightforward thrash album. Also, their version of the Sodom classic "Blasphemer" fits right in perfectly. In all, Vexed is another killer band for fans of cult, raw black thrash, and they fit nicely in your collection right next to Venom. » view product details |
