Review from Lords of Metal:
What is avant garde? It is daunting to define something that defies definitions by definition, but it shouldn’t be all too difficult to explain what is not avant garde. Copying a band’s sound, regardless of how oddball the original version may be, is not. Whirling sound uncannily like Ved Buens Ende and Virus, so calling them original would be stretching it way too far, despite their unusual sound.
At least these Swedes are doing it well, and it also speaks in their favour that they are at least ripping off something original. Ved Buens Ende were way ahead of their time and it is a shame that neither they nor others developed this kind of unnerving, unhinged black metal. Therefore, despite not offering anything new at all, ‘Faceless Phenomena’ is more welcome than it should be. All five songs (+ intro) are wonderful examples of dissonant, angular, almost disjointed riffs, drums that range from black metal half-blasts to jazzy improvisations and above all the kind of aloof, alien vocals we all owe Carl Michael Eide eternal gratitude for. Contrary to Eide’s own current band, Virus, Whirling have stuck with the black metal elements, making ‘Faceless Phenomena’ a tad more varied.
Whirling are the spitting image of Ved Buens Ende and therefore ‘Faceless Phenomena’ offers a perspective on how that band could have sounded if they hadn’t been so scandalously short-lived. And there you have it: the ultimate reviewer’s dilemma. ‘Faceless Phenomena’ sounds great, brilliant even, and therefore it is very tempting to award a high score. The fact that it is not their own brilliance reduces this score drastically, however. This is shameless copying, but because of their amazing talent it is not that hard to forgive Whirling. Moreover, the material on ‘Faceless Phenomena’ is rather old and according to the band’s Myspace the next album will be more representative of Whirling’s sound. We’ll see… » view product details |

Coming to existence in December of 2001 when Ivan Galdamez (guitar) joined forces with Ed Baugh (drums/vocals) to create a raw traditional death metal band called Redrum. April 2002 they released a demo entitled “Redrum 2002” and sought out to recruit members. May 2003 brought Andrew Rafacz (guitar) into the picture and same year Redrum would become WHORRID . Shortly after the release of their second demo “Bitch Butchers” in 2004 , Ed would part ways with the band leaving Ivan to take on the vocal duties and a long process would start of finding the right pieces to the perfect line up. Going through many members ( Narcyz Fortuna – drums 2004/2006 , Martin Labuz – bass 2004/2005 ) and session players, the puzzle was finally being complete with the addition of Jarek Badzioch on bass in fall of 2005 and drummer Brian Wimmer in 2007. January 29,2006 marked the release of their full length debut “Infecting the Soul”, one year later signing a deal with Rotting Corpse Records for the release of their second full length “Time Heals Nothing” (2009).
