On their latest release, "Quietus," Empyrean comes off sounding more as symphonic black metal than the death metal they are classified, but it does not seem to affect their potential at all. The band weaves a massive environment of sound and goes to all lengths to deliver it as dynamically as possible. Their thoughts aren't over-egotistical, however, as Empyrean is able to keep things within a logical limit of musicianship. This bodes well for their style, as they show a controlled effort on the whole.
When compared to Emperor, for example, we can see Empyrean not being quite as wild in their musical endeavours, as both the guitar playing and the symphonic elements are comparatively restrained. The staccato riffing is present here, but is more held back compared to that of Emperor again. The band is able to make themselves a unique identity within the genre however, as their music scorches up a good amount overall. The song “Quietus” shows both Empyrean’s ability to play a chaotic type of approach and also to let the more serene moments slip in for variety.
The downside of the album is perhaps that you would wish Empyrean became slightly more insane in their approach, but this isn’t the end of the world for the band, as they are able to forge a fairly balanced alternative. I also wasn’t the biggest fan of the vocals of James Hill. In the end this is a solid display of symphonic elements blended into a frenetic pacing that delivers a decent ride to the listener.
"Quietus" is not the greatest album you’ve ever heard, but there’s enough on display to make for a very good ride. The melding of symphonic ideas with a distinctive style makes for a good combination, and Empyrean is able to capitalize upon it to some extent.

By rights, iNFeCTeD should have got much bigger than they did. Distinctively different from most of the rest of the Australian death metal scene at the time, they got a two-album deal with Thrust on the strength of a demo, played supports with everyone that mattered and even appeared at the Big Day Out. But their breakthrough never really came. Being from Perth at a time when even east coast bands found it tough to tour much and unable to consolidate a deal with Roadrunner, iNFeCTeD finally ground to halt in late 1996, leaving their recorded legacy to wallow in obscurity. It took me ages to find a copy of crawlspace, eventually tracking one down online a few years back. That's a terrible shame, but the hunt should be easier now because this seminal album was recently re-mastered and re-issued and if you missed it the first time, don't make the same mistake again.
Recorded in 1993 and released the following year (with a cover than was redder and more obscure), crawlspace sounds like few other domestic metal bands of the period. While Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse and Carcass were the terms of reference for most of the death metal brigade, iNFeCTeD were taking their cues from Godflesh and Fear Factory. The results may not have been wholly original, but they were certainly inspired and effective. Right away, "The Sleeper" let the listener know that they're about to hear something unconventional for the time, with a harsh, grinding guitar sound and an angry, snarling vocal.
With "Truthkill" the band sounds most like it is channeling the dark energy of Streetcleaner with its coarse, angular riffs and droning, distorted bass and the title track is reminiscent of something like "Martyr" or "Scumgrief" from Soul of a New Machine. The chunky, chugging breakdown riff in the middle of "Once More" foreshadows the basic alterna-metal sound that would later flood the scene, but here Gareth Morris fills it up with clattering drums like an outbreak of sniper fire. Guitarist Matthew Jefferson throws up riffs that churn and stumble into each other and then scatters minimalistic, dissonant solos into random songs without bothering to lay down a rhythm track underneath, leaving James Campbell's bass to crash against them with a raw thud. Joe Kapiteyn's vocals are also a distinctively unique element of iNFeCTeD's sound, more of a hoarse, punkish bark like Justin Broadrick than anything approximating the Vincent-esque roaring growl other bands employ. Stylistically, this is a band way ahead of its time, and the re-mastered version, featuring a remix of "Assimilate" that displays their industrial pretentions, makes crawlspace sound like it was recorded in 2009, not 17 years ago.
Crawlspace truly is an Australian death metal classic, relegated to forgotten realms no more. Seek it out.

This is truly a rise for IRATE ARCHITECT, from a fairly generic Death/Grind Metal group to an almost iconic modern Death Metal outfit. Truly this is one of the most incredible and professional death metal albums released in a very long time. Right from the start it enthralls you, captivating, unique and very catchy (in a very morbid way), riffs will send you into an involuntary headbanging frenzy. "Visitors" is a product of the unholy matrimony of insane drum patterns and intricate guitar riffs, not to mention the thick and crystal clear production. Let just say that the production on this album is unrivalled in its richness and texture, every instrument is clear and orthogonal. Modern death metal for the ears of a sick youth!

Irate Architect is a Wedel/Hamburg, Germany based death metal band. Until now, they only released an EP entitled Born Blood Portrait in 2005, making Visitors their debut full-length.

I actually had a hard time reviewing this disc. Not because of the production, which is fairly good, but because this is music which is hard to understand. All fifteen tracks on Visitors are full of experiments within the technical death metal sound. We get to hear slower and speedy parts, a lot of guitar virtuosity and a large amount of twists, turns and other tricks.

Comparisons that come to mind are for example Visceral Bleeding, in terms of song structures. The slower parts remind me of Cephalic Carnage’s mid-paced work, while the well-present sound of the bass guitar make me think of Irate Architects’ country mates Obscura. Other styles can be heard in the instrumental intermezzo “Awareness”, which contains a calm yet creepy atmospheric tune, before the album continues its grind path. During “Seduction” we even get to hear a small jazz influence.

Yep, it seems that this album has all the facets of a varying debut record. Yet, I still have the feeling that there’s something missing. Is it lack of originality? It’s hard to be truly original in today’s metal scene, but from Cephalic Carnage we can say that they are, ‘cause of their epic guitar tones. Lack of catchiness then? The aforementioned Obscura sure plays a lot of striking melodies... a bit too much maybe, but Irate could use some of it, so that you’ll be able to remember and recognize their songs.

Keeping in mind that this is only Irate Architect’s debut album, and trusting on their talent and skills, I can say that they delivered a fine piece of tech-death. A real exhaustion battle. Yet I hope that they’re able to create a more epic and significant record next time, so we can link new bands to them instead of the opposite. (Metalrage.com)

In the beginning they were mainly influenced by grindcore and death metal; by bands like Extreme Noise Terror, Terrorizer, and Napalm Death. They gradually tried to introduce other various styles of music.
In 1992 after recording 3 demo tapes they started to work with Ecocentric Records. In 1993 they played their first show (Bremen, Germany) followed by gigs with Anal Cunt, Cripple Bastards, Agathocles and fellow Germans, W.B.I., Necrophiliacs, and Pink Flamingos. In June 1997 they played their first gigs abroad (Slovenia).
In 2002 they reformed with a slighty changed line-up and established a new collaboration with “Life is Abuse” (US) and “Regurgitated Semen Records.” (GER).

My dear Death Metal maniacs - what can I say about such an underground institution like POSTMORTEM? They are without a doubt one of the finest German Death / Thrash Metal bands and for years deeply connected with one of the finest German Metal labels Morbid Records. But time is changing and since the downfall of their label they’ve found a new home in the Party San sister company War Anthem Records. But did this influence the Berlin based combo in any way? Definitely not, “Constant Hate” is a real skull crushing record with so many great songs and a high headbanging potential. The powerful sound (mastered at Stage One Studio) gives the ten songs such a destructive potential to crush half the German scene in a heartbeat. Talking more as a fan than the serious Metal journalist I have to confirm that “Constant Hate” is really kicking ass and songs like the opener ‘Are You Dead’ or ‘Killing Days’ are pure Metal and the album has the potential to sell faster than cold beer on a sunny day. Review from Teufel's Tomb
A great way to cap off a completely crappy day at work – because as much as I like doing CD reviews, it just doesn’t pay the mortgage – is coming home and finding a CD or two delivered in the mail. For an immature guy like me, it makes me like a kid at Christmas, screaming and throwing a fit if I don’t get what I want.
Yesterday’s arrival was none other than Grindvirus, the brand new release by Polish grindmeisters Squash Bowels. Squash Bowels have been around since 1994 playing a consistent, if formulatic style of grind. Upon giving the CD its first play, my expectations were a bit tempered. This is because even though I enjoyed both No Mercy and The MassRotting-The Mass Sickening by these guys, I found both albums to be a bit lacking in variety. While they were both brutal and intense, I thought most of the songs sounded too similar and tended to get redundant quickly.
Well – stop the presses, back the truck up, hold your horses, and any other fucking cliché you can use. Because this CD, as they say, changes everything. As this review is being typed, the CD is on its’ 8th play in about 24 hours. Forget potential, Squash Bowels has put it all together as far as I am concerned.
The band has gone through some changes, and all for the better. New guitarist Andy plays with a fluidity that I found lacking in previous efforts. Instead of simply pummeling you with a buzz-saw style approach, Andy throws some awesome fucking riffs on “Sheep Dag,” “Shit Oneself,” (great title, by the way) and “Child Victims.” Drummer Marius comes to life as well, adding some creative rhythms to “Bacterial Fertliser” and the gruntstramental “D.I.” One of my gripes with No Mercy was the lack of variance in the drumming. That is definitely not the case here. The band seems more willing to throw in some tempo changes periodically, which allows the songs to develop and progress. Because the songwriting is better, the tempo changes don’t take away from the intensity of the CD one bit.
Finally, we have remaining member Arthur on bass and vocals. Arthur is in fine form here, offering both manic screeches and low guttural vocals throughout the disc. With the improved musicianship, the vocals stand out more and fit the songs perfectly. The band maintains their sense of humor with titles like “Don’t Look A Gift Horse In The Ass” and “Nose-Lunger” (yum!).
In the few months that I’ve contributed to Teufel’s Tomb, I have yet to submit a review that I deemed an Essential buy. Well, you can consider that cherry popped in a big way. As always some may disagree with that assessment, but this is my fucking review not yours. Feel free to go write your own review and have your mom tape it to the fridge if you want. I’m sure she’ll be proud of you. For the rest of you, stop whatever it is you’re doing right now and go get this fucking album.

Poland's gore masters are back with a new MCD! Originally intended to be a split with MORTICIAN (US), they decided to put out the material as a stand alone release. Marking the first time since "Surgical Disembowelment" that the band has used actual lyrics in the songs, "Corpses of the Universe" shows signs of DEAD INFECTION shaking things up with their goregrind platters, while still serving that unmistakable bass-heavy distortion-soaked sound that goregrind fans the world over hunger for.

The track "Peritonitis" is a re-recorded song from the "Start Human Slaughter" demo, and the CD includes a bonus track that is not featured on the Obliteration version (a cover of MORTICIAN's "Bloodcraving") and two video tracks, and the whole rotten thing is housed in a three-panel digipak.

The long-awaited first full length by the Dutch high-speed maniacs BLOOD I BLEED is here. The guys, whose members made up 3/4 of the legendary MY MINDS MINE line-up, deliver unrelenting hyper-fastcore/grind that is raw as a crusty snot stain on a filthy flannel shirt. Capturing the rage and speed in the studio was obviously more important to these veterans of grind than getting a clean, polished performance, and that makes "Gods Out of Monsters" so much the better. There isn't a whole lot of variation here; they've just focused on intensity and lots of it. The album contains 23 songs and even features an ENEMY SOIL cover to boot. It's all go, no slow!

Songs take a left turn and then a right before circling back and threatening to turn the wheel violently while stepping on the gas, and damn the consequences. Just when you think you’re in for a high-octane ride, they through a slow burner at you, and yet you’re compelled by the power of Mothra to stay on board. And when you’ve about caught your breath, they throw even more tricks at you from up their sleeve, if only to demonstrate that when you think you have this band figured, you probably don’t. But it’s a great listen as you try to puzzle it out, all the while Mothra pulling the rug out from under you with their barrage of structure changes and aggro beats and riffs. Fans of Converge, Burnt By The Sun, and older The Dillinger Escape Plan should enjoy this record!
